OVERVIEW
Morelia is a large city in western Mexico, with a preserved centre of baroque churches, civic buildings and long arcaded streets. Modern residential districts extend widely beyond it, while local markets and universities keep the wider city active. Public squares and residential streets keep the historic core connected to a much larger working city. Away from the principal landmarks, music culture gives way gradually to churches across the wider area.
Architecture, food and markets provide the strongest appeal, while music and craft traditions add cultural depth. The centre is especially atmospheric in the evening. Markets provides the most immediate experience, while churches offers a quieter and more local perspective. The relationship between churches and markets becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
