Mentawai Islands are a remote archipelago off western Sumatra, with forested interiors, coral reefs and communities spread across several large islands. Indigenous traditions remain important alongside a growing surf economy. Reef sits alongside islands, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. Beyond the central area, reefs and forest continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.

Boat based surf trips dominate international tourism, while village visits and forest travel require sensitive local guidance. Transport is slow and conditions can be demanding. Forest provides the most immediate experience, while reef offers a quieter and more local perspective. A visit centred only on reef would overlook reefs, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
