OVERVIEW
Bukittinggi sits in the highlands of western Sumatra, surrounded by volcanoes, rice fields and cool mountain air. A large canyon cuts close to the centre, while markets, a clock tower and streets of low commercial buildings form the urban core. Traditional Minangkabau houses with dramatic curved roofs appear throughout the surrounding countryside.
Food, matrilineal culture and village architecture are central to the region’s character. Short trips reach craft centres, royal compounds and terraced fields, while the town itself is busiest around markets and evening food stalls. Traffic can be dense, but the cooler climate and dramatic landscape provide clear relief from the coastal lowlands.
