OVERVIEW
Martinique is a mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean, with rainforest, beaches and towns spread between a volcanic north and more developed southern coast. French administration and Creole culture shape language, food and everyday life. The transition between rainforest and coast is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre. Away from the principal landmarks, beaches gives way gradually to mountain terrain across the wider area, with beaches providing an additional point of connection.
Driving reveals major contrasts between black sand shores, plantations and resort beaches. Markets, rum and hiking add depth beyond the coast, while road conditions and traffic can make journeys slower than expected. Mountain terrain provides the most immediate experience, while beaches offers a quieter and more local perspective. Time spent around mountain terrain also brings coast into view, adding a different layer to the visit, with coast providing an additional point of connection.
