OVERVIEW
Marlborough is a broad wine region at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island, with vineyards spread across dry valleys between low hills and coastal sounds. Sauvignon Blanc dominates production, while small towns and farming communities provide the main services. The destination is physically divided between local food and island interior, with roads and settlements linking the two.
Wine tasting is the central experience, but cycling, seafood and boat trips add welcome variety. Choosing one valley and one coastal section allows a more relaxed view of the region than attempting every cellar and waterway. Routes through island interior lead naturally towards working vineyards, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
