OVERVIEW
Abel Tasman is a protected coastal region at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. Forested headlands divide a sequence of golden beaches, clear bays and tidal estuaries, with no large settlement inside the main natural area. A long coastal walking route follows much of the shoreline, while kayaks and small boats provide access to coves that cannot be reached directly by road.
The coastline is experienced in stages rather than from one famous viewpoint. Walking paths repeatedly emerge from forest onto open beaches, and boat travel shows how closely the bays sit together despite their secluded appearance. Tides affect several crossings and change the shape of the estuaries during the day. Seals and coastal birds are common parts of the wider landscape rather than separate attractions.

THINGS TO DO
Kayak between Abel Tasman’s sheltered bays
Join a route suited to your experience and the day’s sea conditions, with a guide if required. Departure beaches and one-way options depend on where you are staying and current transport.
Stop at Anchorage or Torrent Bay
Choose one of these sheltered Coast Track beaches according to your walking or water-taxi route. Tides and transport schedules affect access, so the stop must be planned with the wider day.
Walk part of the Abel Tasman Coast Track
Choose a section that fits your time, transport and water-taxi arrangements rather than assuming the full multi-day track. Check tides, weather and current track notices before setting out.
