OVERVIEW
Mana Pools is a protected river region in northern Zimbabwe, where seasonal pools, woodland and floodplains support elephants, predators and abundant birdlife. Access remains limited and highly seasonal, preserving a strong sense of remoteness across the wider landscape. Ancient trees and broad river views give the protected area a distinctive visual identity. River occupies a different part of the destination from wildlife habitats, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Walking safaris and canoe journeys provide unusually intimate perspectives, requiring experienced guides and strict wildlife discipline. The remoteness and open river landscape create a powerful sense of wilderness. Routes through river lead naturally towards port, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers. Woodland provides the most immediate experience, while river offers a quieter and more local perspective.

THINGS TO DO
Paddle Mana Pools’ main waters
Paddle around Mana Pools’ main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Take a game drive in Mana Pools
Take a guided game drive in Mana Pools’ principal game-viewing area, using local expertise to understand habitats and animal behaviour. Wildlife moves freely, so no species or sighting should be guaranteed.
Trace Mana Pools’ ancient history
Use Mana Pools’ ancient history to understand a specific part of Mana Pools’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
