OVERVIEW
Lake Kariba is a huge reservoir on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, created by damming the Zambezi River. Fishing towns, safari areas and houseboat routes are spread widely around the shore. Settlement follows the relationship between river and nearby hills, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. Wildlife habitats and river belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Boat travel provides the clearest sense of scale, while wildlife is often visible along quieter banks. Distances are long, so careful selection of one section is essential. Sunset light and submerged tree trunks create the lake’s most distinctive visual character. Wildlife habitats is encountered differently from nearby hills, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
