OVERVIEW
Macau is a highly urbanised coastal territory with a historic centre of churches, squares and merchant streets beside extensive modern casino districts. Reclaimed land and dense residential towers have transformed much of the shoreline. The transition between historic centre and churches is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre. Away from the principal landmarks, residential districts gives way gradually to historic centre across the wider area.
Food, architecture and gaming create sharply different experiences within a small area. Walking through older neighbourhoods reveals a more layered identity than the resort complexes alone. Historic centre is encountered differently from churches, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Time spent around coast also brings historic centre into view, adding a different layer to the visit.

THINGS TO DO
Trace Macau’s historic quarter
Use Macau’s historic quarter to understand a specific part of Macau’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Macau’s historic centre
Look closely at Macau’s historic centre for a concrete introduction to Macau’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Taste regional food scene in Macau
Use Macau’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Macau, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
See a local performance in Macau
Plan an evening at Macau’s main performance district for a performance or show connected to the local scene. Programmes and opening nights change, so check what is actually running during your stay.
