OVERVIEW
Guangzhou stands on the Pearl River in southern China, with a long history as a major port and trading centre. Modern towers, convention districts and extensive residential areas sit beside temples, markets and older merchant streets. The city forms part of one of the world’s largest urban regions. The transition between temples and residential districts is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Food is central, especially dim sum, roasted meats and seafood. River cruises and neighbourhood markets provide strong contrasts with the modern skyline. Distances are large, but the metro makes individual districts relatively easy to explore. Spending time around markets also brings residential districts into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.
