OVERVIEW
Lhasa is a high altitude city on the Tibetan Plateau, centred on major monasteries, temples and the former palace of the Dalai Lama. Modern development extends widely beyond the historic sacred core. Beyond the central area, central streets and outer districts continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use, with monasteries providing an additional point of connection.
Pilgrimage routes and religious rituals remain central to the experience. Travel permits, altitude and state controls require careful planning and sensitivity. Central streets draws most attention, but temples contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. Routes through monasteries lead naturally towards palaces, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Tibet Museum
Use Tibet Museum to understand a specific part of Lhasa’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Norbulingka Summer Palace
Look closely at Norbulingka Summer Palace for a concrete introduction to Lhasa’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Visit Drepung Monastery with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
