OVERVIEW

Kuching is a low rise city in western Borneo, built along the Sarawak River and known for its historic waterfront. Chinese temples, mosques, civic buildings and residential streets reflect long trading connections and ethnic diversity. Away from the principal landmarks, temples gives way gradually to river across the wider area. River and rainforest belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.

Food markets, museums and evening river walks give the city a calm and approachable rhythm. Nearby national parks and cultural villages provide easy access to rainforest and regional traditions. The city works especially well as a gentle introduction to the wider region. A visit centred only on temples would overlook markets, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
