OVERVIEW
Bangka is a large island off the east coast of Sumatra, known for pale beaches scattered with rounded granite boulders. Inland areas contain low hills, plantations and extensive traces of tin mining, an industry that has shaped local towns and landscapes for centuries. Tourism remains relatively modest, with most accommodation concentrated around a few coastal areas.
Swimming and short boat trips are easiest along sheltered shores, while fishing villages and local markets provide more everyday interest. Mining damage is visible in parts of the interior and along some coasts, creating a less uniformly pristine environment than promotional images suggest. Seafood and a mix of Malay and Chinese influences are central to local food culture.
