OVERVIEW
Jinja stands beside the Nile in south eastern Uganda, near the river’s departure from Lake Victoria. The town contains colonial era buildings, markets and residential streets, while dams and rapids shape the surrounding river landscape. Industry and tourism both remain important, with port and residential districts providing the wider context. Away from the principal landmarks, port gives way gradually to lake shore across the wider area.
Rafting and kayaking are major draws, while boat trips and river viewpoints provide gentler alternatives. Cafés and local markets give the town a relaxed social character. The river is the clear centre of the experience. Exploring beyond port reveals lake shore, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
