OVERVIEW
Jaisalmer stands on a rocky ridge in western India, with a living fort of temples, houses and narrow lanes enclosed by golden sandstone walls. Merchant mansions and markets extend into the lower town, while desert villages and dunes surround the urban area. Markets and temples belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
The fort is atmospheric but vulnerable to water damage and heavy tourism. Desert excursions, local music and carved architecture provide the main experiences. Heat is severe outside winter, making timing especially important. Evening light and quieter residential streets reveal more than the busiest daytime routes. The relationship between dunes and temples becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.

THINGS TO DO
Learn local traditions at Jaisalmer Folklore Museum
Use Jaisalmer Folklore Museum to learn about living traditions connected to Jaisalmer, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
Look closely at Gadisar Lake for a concrete introduction to Jaisalmer’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Jaisalmer Fort
Use Jaisalmer Fort to understand a specific part of Jaisalmer’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
