OVERVIEW
Iona is a desert region in south western Angola, where pale plains, rocky mountains and large dune fields extend towards the Atlantic. Sparse vegetation and fog influenced ecosystems support distinctive plants and wildlife. Human settlement is limited and access is difficult. The wider destination extends from mountain terrain towards desert terrain, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Expedition travel requires experienced operators, reliable vehicles and careful water planning. The landscape changes subtly through colour, geology and coastal light. Remoteness is central to the experience, with almost no conventional visitor infrastructure. Time spent around mountain terrain also brings port into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
