OVERVIEW
Ilulissat is a small town on Greenland’s west coast, overlooking a fjord filled with icebergs produced by one of the world’s fastest moving glaciers. Colourful houses climb the rocky slopes, while fishing and tourism remain central to the local economy. Sled dogs are still a visible part of life. Away from the principal landmarks, local neighbourhoods gives way gradually to coast across the wider area.
Boat trips and marked trails provide different views of the iceberg filled fjord. Summer brings long daylight, while winter offers darkness, snow and dog sled travel. Weather and sea ice strongly affect plans, making flexibility essential. Time spent around glaciers also brings coast into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
