OVERVIEW
Île de Ré is a low island off the western coast of France, connected to the mainland by a bridge. Whitewashed villages, vineyards, salt pans and sandy beaches are linked by an extensive cycling network. Small harbours provide the main social and commercial centres. The destination broadens noticeably where coast gives way to beaches beyond the main visitor area.
Cycling is the best way to explore because distances are short and roads are busy in summer. Markets, seafood and beach walks create a relaxed rhythm. Peak season is crowded, but quieter villages and marsh paths remain accessible away from the main ports. Harbour provides the most immediate experience, while island interior offers a quieter and more local perspective.
