OVERVIEW
Hyères stands above the Mediterranean coast in southern France, with a medieval upper town, nineteenth century villas and extensive gardens. Beaches, salt marshes and ferry ports lie below the centre, while nearby islands provide protected coastal landscapes. The town has a long history as a winter resort. The wider destination extends from coast towards island interior, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Walking between the old centre and gardens reveals a quieter side than the busy coast. Ferries reach beaches and trails on the offshore islands. The different levels and districts make the destination more varied than a conventional seaside town. Conditions around islands can differ noticeably from beaches, so flexible timing improves the overall experience.
