OVERVIEW
Hortobágy is a broad steppe landscape in eastern Hungary, protected as a national park and cultural region. Flat grassland, marshes and fish ponds support cranes, geese and other migratory birds. Traditional cattle, sheep and horse herding remain part of the working landscape. Across the wider destination, main settlements remains physically connected with grassland, and local settlement follows that relationship.
Birdwatching is strongest during migration, while horse shows and rural museums explain local pastoral traditions. The landscape can appear empty at first, but guides reveal subtle changes in habitat and land use. Weather and light are central to the experience. Port draws most attention, but museums contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life.
