OVERVIEW
Eger is a small city in northern Hungary, known for its baroque centre, hilltop castle and long wine tradition. Churches, civic buildings and pedestrian streets form a coherent old core, while thermal baths and residential neighbourhoods extend beyond it. Churches and neighbourhoods form separate but closely connected parts of the destination.
The hilltop castle explains the town’s role in resisting Ottoman attack, while the baroque centre and thermal baths create a gentler urban experience below. Wine cellars on the edge of town serve robust local reds and whites. The compact scale makes it easy to combine history, bathing and regional food without needing a car.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Basilica of Eger for a concrete introduction to Eger’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Castle of Eger
Use Castle of Eger to understand a specific part of Eger’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Taste wine around Horseback riding by Mátyus Udvarház
Taste wine around Horseback riding by Mátyus Udvarház with enough time to understand its connection to Eger’s soils, grape varieties and producers. Check opening days and transport before visiting several cellars.
Unwind at Eger Thermal Bath
Plan restorative time at Eger Thermal Bath, checking whether advance booking, swimwear or local bathing customs apply. Thermal and outdoor facilities can also have seasonal restrictions.
