OVERVIEW
Hohe Tauern is a large mountain region in central Austria, encompassing some of the highest peaks and largest glaciers in the eastern Alps. Deep valleys, waterfalls and traditional settlements lie beneath extensive high terrain. Roads, cable cars and trail networks provide access from several separate gateway towns. Across the wider area, waterfalls remains closely connected with mountain terrain, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Hiking ranges from gentle valley walks to demanding high routes and glacier approaches. Wildlife such as ibex, marmots and golden eagles is often associated with quieter areas. The region is too broad for one base, so choosing a valley creates a more coherent experience. Exploring beyond wildlife habitats reveals high peaks, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
