OVERVIEW
The Dolomites form a broad mountain region of sheer rock peaks, high meadows and inhabited valleys in north-eastern Italy. Villages and resort towns provide access to hiking routes, ski areas and scenic roads. Cultural traditions vary between Italian, German-speaking and Ladin communities. Distinct valleys have their own architecture, language and resort traditions.
Walking ranges from gentle meadow paths to exposed routes requiring technical confidence. Cable cars provide easy access to high viewpoints, while mountain huts support longer journeys. The region is extensive, so selecting one or two valleys gives a more coherent experience than trying to cover the whole range quickly.
