OVERVIEW
Hiroshima is a large city in western Japan, built across river channels near the Inland Sea. The central memorial park preserves ruins and museums connected with the atomic bombing, while reconstructed commercial districts, tram lines and residential neighbourhoods extend around it. The city also serves as a major regional transport and cultural centre. The destination is physically divided between ruins and river, with roads and settlements linking the two.
The memorial sites are emotionally demanding and central to understanding the city. Beyond them, food markets, riverside walks and local restaurants reveal an active everyday life. The contrast between remembrance and contemporary vitality is important, preventing the destination from being reduced to one historical event. Markets is encountered differently from ruins, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
