OVERVIEW
Onomichi is a compact town on Japan’s Inland Sea, with old commercial streets, temples and homes climbing steep hills above the waterfront. Ferries and bridges connect a chain of nearby islands. Away from the principal landmarks, central streets gives way gradually to islands across the wider area. Settlement follows the relationship between island interior and temples, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Walking the temple route reveals changing views across roofs and water, while cycling routes extend far beyond the town itself. The centre retains a quiet, lived in character despite its popularity. Conditions around temples can differ noticeably from waterfront, so flexible timing improves the overall experience. Waterfront draws most attention, but central streets contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life.
