OVERVIEW
The High Tatras form a dramatic mountain region in northern Slovakia, with steep granite summits, glacial lakes and deep valleys. Resort settlements and mountain railways provide access to trails, cable cars and ski areas. The range is relatively compact, allowing several distinct valleys to be explored from a small number of bases. Settlement follows the relationship between lake shore and lower valleys, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Walking varies from gentle lakeside routes to exposed summit paths requiring experience and good weather. Winter brings skiing and snow travel, while summer trails become busy around the main lifts. Staying near one valley gives more time for the landscape and less time moving between resort centres. Lakes is encountered differently from mountain terrain, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.

THINGS TO DO
Use High Tatras’ main climbing area as the focus for a climbing day suited to your ability. Local access, equipment and weather matter, so go with a qualified guide when conditions or routes are unfamiliar.
Hike around Lomnický štít peak
Choose a walk around Lomnický štít peak that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Choose terrain at High Tatras’ principal ski area that matches your ability. Operating dates, lift access and snow quality depend on the season and conditions, so check the current report before travelling.
