OVERVIEW
Harbin stands on the Songhua River in north eastern China, with broad avenues, historic churches and architecture influenced by Russian settlement. The city is best known for an immense winter ice festival, when illuminated structures rise across frozen parks. Modern residential and commercial districts extend widely beyond the centre. Architecture sits alongside museums, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Winter temperatures are severe but central to the experience. Museums, bakeries and historic streets provide daytime interest, while ice and snow displays dominate after dark. Summer offers a very different city of parks and river walks. Exploration centred only on residential districts would miss architecture, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
