OVERVIEW
Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city, built around canals and a working harbour on the west coast. Broad boulevards, nineteenth century neighbourhoods and modern cultural venues sit close together, while trams connect the compact centre with residential districts. The nearby archipelago begins just beyond the urban edge. The wider destination extends from harbour towards island interior, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Seafood is central, from market halls to harbour restaurants. Parks, museums and live music add variety, while ferries provide easy access to car free islands. The city feels less formal than the capital and maintains a strong maritime character. Islands is experienced differently from island interior, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.
