OVERVIEW
Gobustan is a rocky region south of Baku, known for thousands of prehistoric carvings on exposed limestone outcrops. The images depict animals, hunting, boats and ritual scenes created over many centuries. Nearby mud volcanoes add an unusual geological element to the dry semi desert landscape. Beyond the central area, main settlements and fortifications continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
The archaeological reserve is compact and well interpreted, while reaching the mud volcanoes usually requires rough road travel. The carvings reward close attention rather than a quick walk. Wind and heat can be strong, making morning visits more comfortable. Volcanic slopes is experienced differently from desert terrain, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.
