OVERVIEW
The Gobi Desert covers a vast region of southern Mongolia, combining stony plains, sand dunes, dry valleys and rugged mountains. Nomadic herding communities live across the landscape, while fossil beds have produced major dinosaur discoveries. There is no single centre, and travel involves long overland journeys between widely separated sites. Dunes and main settlements belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Days are built around driving, walking and visits to family camps rather than dense sightseeing. Temperatures vary sharply between day and night, and weather can be severe. The scale and emptiness are the defining experience, supported by exceptional night skies and a strong sense of distance. Routes through desert terrain lead naturally towards dunes, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
