OVERVIEW

Gorkhi-Terelj is a protected grassland and mountain region east of Ulaanbaatar, with broad valleys, forested slopes and distinctive granite formations. Yurt camps, family settlements and small resorts are spread along the main river corridor. The area offers one of the easiest introductions to rural landscapes near the capital. Across the wider area, mountain terrain remains closely connected with river, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.

Horse riding, short hikes and family stays provide the strongest experiences. Some sections are heavily developed, while quieter valleys lie farther from the main road. Winter is severe, but the landscape remains striking under snow. Mountain terrain provides the most immediate experience, while forest offers a quieter and more local perspective, with grassland providing an additional point of connection.
