Gir is a protected forest region in western India, known as the final natural refuge of the Asiatic lion. Dry woodland, grassland and seasonal rivers support leopards, deer, antelope and numerous birds. Villages and pastoral communities remain closely connected to the surrounding landscape. Seasonal rivers and open clearings break up the woodland and support a wider range of wildlife.

Jeep safaris provide the main wildlife access, though lion sightings are never guaranteed. Early mornings offer cooler conditions and more activity. Conservation success has increased animal numbers, but balancing tourism, local livelihoods and habitat pressure remains an important part of the region’s story. Early starts provide cooler conditions and a better chance of hearing or seeing wildlife activity.
