OVERVIEW
Ahmedabad is the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, built on both sides of the Sabarmati River. Its old city contains tightly packed traditional neighbourhoods, carved wooden houses, markets and major Islamic monuments, while newer districts hold universities, businesses and influential modern architecture. The former home of Mahatma Gandhi on the riverbank adds an important connection to India’s independence movement.
The city is especially rewarding for architecture, craft and food rather than for one dominant landmark. Early walks through the old neighbourhoods reveal elaborate houses, bird-feeding towers and religious buildings in close proximity. Textile museums and workshops explain the industry that shaped the city’s growth, while vegetarian street food and markets provide a strong introduction to Gujarati culture.
