OVERVIEW
Ghent grew at the meeting point of two rivers and preserves a dense historic centre of guild houses, churches and canals. Medieval wealth is visible in towers, civic buildings and a large castle, while university life and modern culture animate the surrounding streets. Former industrial districts have also been repurposed for housing and creative use.
The city feels less stage managed than some nearby heritage centres. Cycling, food markets and waterside cafés make everyday life highly visible, while museums provide strong artistic and social history. Evening illumination along the canals adds atmosphere without overwhelming the lived in character. The relationship between rivers and castle adds variety without requiring long transfers.
