Bruges grew wealthy through medieval trade and preserves a dense centre of brick houses, churches, canals and civic buildings. Two large squares anchor the old town, while quieter waterways and former convent areas extend beyond the busiest streets. Much of the centre is protected from heavy traffic, reinforcing its compact historic character.

Day visitors concentrate around the main squares and canal routes, but early mornings and evenings reveal a calmer residential city. Museums hold major Flemish artworks, while breweries, chocolate shops and lace traditions add familiar local themes. The historic fabric is the main attraction, and little practical orientation is needed once inside the old walls.
