OVERVIEW
Ghadames is a historic oasis settlement in western Libya, with a compact old town of whitewashed mud brick houses and covered streets. Buildings are arranged to provide shade and airflow, while rooftop terraces create a second network of movement above the lanes. Palm gardens and wells surround the inhabited core. Across the wider area, desert terrain remains closely connected with gardens, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
The architecture is the main attraction, revealing ingenious adaptation to desert climate and social life. The old town has lost much of its permanent population, but local families continue to maintain houses and traditions. Current security conditions require careful and recent official guidance. Routes between architecture and central streets show how the destination changes beyond its principal attractions.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Ghadames Museum
Use Ghadames Museum to understand a specific part of Ghadames’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Discover living traditions in Ghadames
Use Ghadames’ living traditions to learn about living traditions connected to Ghadames, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
Look closely at Atiq Mosque for a concrete introduction to Ghadames’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
