OVERVIEW
Gauja is a broad river region in Latvia, shaped by wooded valleys, sandstone outcrops and historic settlements. Castles, manor houses and small towns line the river corridor, while protected forest supports hiking, cycling and canoeing. The landscape becomes especially colourful in autumn, with castle and forest providing the wider context. Settlements and historic sites occupy the easier ground above the river and its wooded slopes.
River travel and ridge trails reveal the changing geology more clearly than road travel alone. Several towns provide easy access to ruins, caves and forest paths. The area is well developed for outdoor recreation but still feels spacious, especially beyond the most popular viewpoints. Canoeing, cycling and forest walks provide different perspectives on the same valley landscape.

THINGS TO DO
Explore Gauja’s archaeological sites
Explore Gauja’s archaeological sites to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Gauja. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Admire Gauja’s landmark architecture
Look closely at Gauja’s landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Gauja’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Walk Gauja’s valley trails
Choose a walk around Gauja’s valley trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Paddle Gauja’s main waters
Paddle around Gauja’s main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Cycle Gauja’s principal route
Choose a cycling route around Gauja’s principal cycling route that matches your fitness and the available time. Check gradients, surfaces and traffic rather than judging the ride by distance alone.
