OVERVIEW
Gargano is a mountainous peninsula on Italy’s Adriatic coast, with limestone cliffs, pine forest and a deeply indented shoreline. Hill towns, pilgrimage sites and fishing communities are spread across the region, while a protected inland forest covers much of the plateau. Beaches vary from long sandy bays to hidden coves beneath cliffs. Away from the principal landmarks, bay gives way gradually to mountain terrain across the wider area.
Driving and walking reveal sharp contrasts between coast, forest and high villages. Boat trips reach sea caves and isolated beaches, while inland roads pass monasteries and rural settlements. Summer brings heavy traffic near the main resorts, but quieter landscapes remain accessible away from the busiest shore. Mountain terrain provides the most immediate experience, while forest offers a quieter and more local perspective, with mountain terrain providing an additional point of connection.
