OVERVIEW
The Amalfi Coast is a short but intensely developed stretch of southern Italian coastline where mountains drop directly into the sea. Towns are built on steep slopes around small harbours, with houses, churches, gardens and terraces stacked above the water. Ferries and a winding coastal road connect the main settlements, while walking paths climb through lemon groves and older hillside villages.
The region is visually spectacular but not effortless. Streets contain many steps, roads can be congested and the most famous towns become crowded in peak periods. Ferries provide a useful alternative and show the coast from its clearest angle. Staying in one base and visiting a limited number of places usually gives a better sense of the landscape than trying to cover the entire shoreline quickly.
