OVERVIEW
Florianópolis spreads across Santa Catarina Island and a small mainland area, combining urban districts, fishing villages, dunes and more than forty beaches. Lagoons and forested hills divide the island into separate coastal zones. The historic centre provides markets and civic buildings, while beach neighbourhoods dominate the visitor experience.
The central lagoon, eastern surf beaches and southern fishing villages create very different coastal experiences. Northern resort districts are more developed, while the south retains quieter trails and traditional seafood communities. Summer traffic can be severe on the island’s narrow roads, so choosing one area as a base is more practical than trying to cross the entire island each day.

THINGS TO DO
Taste local food around Municipal Market
Use Municipal Market as a starting point for tasting food connected to Florianópolis, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Surf at Florianópolis’ best-known surf break only in conditions suited to your ability. Breaks, currents and access vary by season, and unfamiliar locations are best approached with local advice.
Spend time at El Divino Beach rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
