OVERVIEW
Búzios occupies a narrow peninsula east of Rio de Janeiro, with more than twenty beaches facing different wind and wave conditions. The former fishing village grew into a major resort, and its centre now contains boutiques, restaurants and a busy waterfront promenade. Low hills and rocky headlands divide the coastline into distinct bays.
Some beaches are calm and suited to swimming, while others attract surfers and wind sports. Boat trips reveal coves that are less accessible by road, and evenings centre on the pedestrian streets around the harbour. Development is extensive, but small fishing areas and quieter northern beaches retain traces of the original settlement.
