OVERVIEW
Étretat sits in a narrow valley opening onto the Channel, with white chalk cliffs rising on both sides of a pebble beach. Natural arches and a tall offshore needle create the best known views, while a small town of hotels, cafés and traditional houses extends inland.
Cliff paths provide the strongest perspectives but are exposed to wind and involve steep climbs. The beach and rock arches change dramatically with tide and weather. Day visitors can overwhelm the compact centre, so mornings, evenings and off season stays are noticeably calmer. The destination suits walkers and photographers more than travellers seeking extensive urban activity.
