OVERVIEW
Brighton spreads along the English Channel around a broad pebble beach. Grand Regency squares, a flamboyant royal pavilion and a long pier reflect its history as a fashionable resort, while narrow central lanes contain independent shops, cafés and nightlife. Residential districts climb the hills behind the seafront.
The beach and promenade remain central throughout the year, though swimming conditions and weather are often changeable. Music, art, LGBTQ+ culture and a large student population give the city an unusually open character. The centre is compact and walkable, while neighbouring Hove offers broader streets and a calmer waterfront.
