OVERVIEW
The Ennedi Plateau rises from the Sahara in north eastern Chad, with cliffs, towers and natural arches carved into sandstone. Seasonal waterholes support wildlife and nomadic communities, while rock shelters preserve thousands of prehistoric paintings and engravings. The landscape is vast, isolated and almost entirely roadless.
Travel requires experienced expedition teams, large fuel and water reserves, and careful security planning. The reward is a sequence of monumental rock formations and archaeological sites encountered with almost no modern development or visitor infrastructure. Night skies and changing desert light add as much impact as the named formations.
