OVERVIEW
Eilat occupies a narrow strip of coast between desert mountains and the Gulf of Aqaba. Hotels, beaches and marinas line the waterfront, while coral reefs begin close to shore. The city is purpose built around tourism and has little historic centre, but the surrounding geology is striking.
Snorkelling and diving reveal unusually clear water, coral and colourful marine life close to shore. Desert hikes and narrow canyon excursions create a sharp contrast with the resort strip. Summer heat is extreme, and the city feels highly purpose built, but travellers focused on reefs and winter sun will find the setting practical and compact.

THINGS TO DO
Relax at Eilat Coral Beach Nature Reserve
Spend time at Eilat Coral Beach Nature Reserve rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Look for wildlife around Underwater Observatory
Look for wildlife around Underwater Observatory with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
Dive at Eilat’s principal sites
Dive around Eilat’s principal dive sites with an operator suited to your certification and experience. Visibility, currents and access change with conditions, and particular sightings are never guaranteed.
Snorkel around Dolphin Reef only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
