OVERVIEW
Durmitor is a mountain area in northern Montenegro, centred on a high plateau of sharp peaks, forests and glacial lakes. The Tara River cuts one of Europe’s deepest canyons along its edge. Žabljak provides the main base for hiking, winter sports and access to the protected landscape.
Trails range from easy lake circuits to demanding summit routes over exposed limestone. Rafting through the deep river canyon reveals the landscape from below, while scenic roads cross open uplands and traditional villages. The main mountain town provides practical accommodation, but weather changes quickly and snow can remain on higher routes well into summer.
