OVERVIEW
Bay of Kotor is a deeply indented coastal region in Montenegro, where steep limestone mountains rise directly above sheltered water. Fortified towns, fishing villages and newer residential development line the narrow shores. Roads follow the bay’s edge, linking settlements whose architecture reflects Venetian rule, maritime trade and Orthodox traditions.
Boat trips give the clearest sense of the bay’s unusual shape and the close relationship between mountains and settlements. Cruise arrivals can make Kotor extremely busy during the day, while quieter villages provide swimming, waterfront restaurants and a more residential atmosphere. Short distances can still take time because roads are narrow and traffic follows the shoreline.
