OVERVIEW
Dresden stands on both banks of the Elbe, with a historic centre reconstructed after wartime destruction. Baroque churches, royal palaces and major art collections cluster near the river, while nineteenth century districts and modern neighbourhoods extend outward. The surrounding valley and wooded hills soften the formal architecture of the centre.
Museums are a major strength, especially collections of painting, porcelain and decorative arts. River walks and nearby residential quarters provide relief from the monumental core, while evening views across the skyline are particularly striking. The rebuilding is itself part of the city’s story, raising questions about memory, authenticity and urban identity.
