OVERVIEW
Devon spans two separate coastlines in south-west England, with exposed Atlantic beaches in the north and more sheltered bays in the south. Inland areas contain farmland, river valleys and high moorland. Seaside towns, fishing villages and historic market centres are spread widely across the county.
Coastal walking, surfing, gardens and rural drives provide very different experiences. Distances can be deceptive because roads are narrow and indirect. Choosing one coast or inland area allows a more relaxed visit, while local food and small towns add substance beyond the best-known beaches. Moorland villages and estuary towns provide a strong inland and river-based contrast.
