OVERVIEW
Death Valley is a large desert region of low basins, mountain ranges and deeply eroded canyons. The valley floor contains salt flats below sea level, while surrounding roads climb to broad viewpoints and cooler elevations. Mining remains and scattered historic sites reveal earlier attempts to live and work in the extreme environment.
Heat is life-threatening in summer and limits safe outdoor activity. Cooler months allow short walks, scenic drives and night-sky viewing across a huge landscape. Distances are long, fuel is limited and mobile coverage unreliable, so preparation matters as much as sightseeing. Sunrise and evening light reveal the strongest colour and relief in the desert formations.

THINGS TO DO
Watch the night sky in Death Valley
Use Death Valley’s darkest viewing area for a night-sky session away from the strongest local light. Cloud, moonlight and seasonal access affect visibility, so check conditions before making a special journey.
Drive Death Valley’s desert roads
Build a manageable drive through Death Valley’s desert roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Death Valley, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Hike around Telescope Peak
Choose a walk around Telescope Peak that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Take in the view from Echo Canyon
Set aside time at Echo Canyon specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
